Best Fish and Chips 2011

New Zealand's best fish and chip shop in 2011 was a takeaway shop in Rotorua, that was also a finalist in the 2010 national rankings.

Oppies Takeway was named New Zealand's top chip shop after taking the number one spot the Best Chip Shop Competition.

Chip Group Chairperson, Glenda Gourley, said Oppies was a deserved winner of its national title after going so close a year earlier. "The shop is an institution in Rotorua and their commitment to excellence is second to none."

To win the award as the best fish and chip shop in New Zealand, Oppies was judged on the freshness and colour of their chips, shop cleanliness and customer service. Chips were analysed for fat content and only those with less than 11% of fat were judged, said competition organisers.

Regional finalists were decided through public text voting, mystery judging and chip fat analysis, with the overall winner then chosen by a panel of judges.
