Kiwi beliefs
Results of a 2009 Massey University study reveal the beliefs of adult New Zealanders. Of 1,027 people polled:- 27% are certain that God exists
- 39% believe in fortune tellers and faith healers
- 40% have no religious affiliation
- 60% would prefer children to have religious education in state primary schools with most wanting support for teaching about all faiths
- 70% support assisted suicide with a doctor's help for someone with a painful, incurable disease
- 25% believe in good luck charms, reincarnation and star signs
- 51% believe in heaven
- 36% believe in hell
- 50% prayed at least several times a year
- 40% believed sex between same gender adults was wrong
A Sunday Star-Times survey of beliefs found:
- 33% believe there had been acts of witchcraft
- 58% believe it's possible to predict the future
- 47% of women believe it's possible to communicate with the dead
- 18% of men believe it's possible to communicate with the dead
- 72% of men believe in extra terrestrial life
- 60% of women believe in extra terrestrial life
- 3.3% think it's likely Elvis Presley faked his own death
