Geothermal attractions

High on your list of things to do in Taupo must be to see the geothermal attractions. Nature has created some fascinating places to visit around Taupo where underground steam delivers everything from hot pools to the Warakei geothermal power station, a few kilometres from town. Have your camera handy when you visit the parks which resemble the sets of sci fi movies due to the steamy and colourful scenery.

Water pursuits

The nearby Huka falls are a popular attraction for those fascinated by the power of water as the Waikato river sluices through a narrow gap. Jet boating is available and there are many opportunities to fish for trout in rivers and streams. Lake Taupo offers visitors the chance to ski, sail, swim and fish.

Outdoor sports

In fact Taupo actively promotes itself as a venue for stamina events such as half marathons, full and half triathlons and full and half ironman contests. At the start of every summer, Taupo hosts the country’s largest mass participation cycle event with the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge attracting more than 11,000 riders. Later in the summer, the Great Lake Relay is held with running teams of 10-18 members completing legs of between 4.7km and 14.4km.

Taupo is an excellent base for visiting the Tongariro National Park where visitors can explore its volcanic mountains and many tracks that are suitable for hiking and mountain trail biking.
