Puzzling World

Wanaka

Wanaka's population has grown almost 50% over the past decade (to about 5,000) as the town has increased in popularity as a resort town. The township, which began as a gold rush centre in the 19th century, is situated at the southern end of Lake Wanaka and is less than two hours drive from Queenstown.

Reasons to visit include:

Climate

Wanaka is one of the few places in New Zealand to have a continental climate in which the town experiences four distinct seasons. Annual rainfall of 682mm is half the national average while summers deliver hot and dry temperatures reaching the high 30s, with an average of 24 degrees. The climate helps visitors get the best from the town's very different winter and summer activities.

Winter sports

Wanaka claims to offer the broadest range of snow activities in the country with easy access to Treble Cone, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Snow Park and Snow Farm, all of which are among New Zealand's leading commercial ski fields. The snow season, from July to September, provides opportunities for skiiers, snowboarders and those who simply like to relax and breathe clean, crisp air.

Summer sports

Lake Wanaka is popular for waterskiing, wakeboarding and sailing. The local rivers provide plenty of opportunities for trout fishing. With the mountains free of snow for a few months, they become ideal for mountain bikers and hikers to explore. A local pine forest also offers the chance for mountain bikers to get away from it all.

National Park

The Mount Aspiring National Park is popular for mountaineering and hiking. Tourists can take organised trips ranging from single day expeditions to week-long treks. Rock climbers find plenty of challenges in the Matukituki Valley.

Festivals

Local festivals include the annual Wanakafest, the New Zealand Freeski open and the two-yearly New Zealand Rippon music festival. Every two years, Wanaka also hosts the Warbirds over Wanaka airshow which attracts visitors from around the world who want to see restored fighter planes going through their paces above the town.

Attractions

Popular local attractions include Puzzling World which is a collection of oddball and interactive features such as a leaning tower, a three-dimensional maze and a number of optical illusions. The Paradisio Cinema in town is a classic old cinema where moviegoers can recline on old couches or in a car.
